Other than the Roman gladius and early Medieval transitional swords like the spatha, which wasn't exactly a short sword if Wikipedia is right about its length being as short as 0.75 m (i.e., 2.5'), there didn't seem to be any short swords in pre-modern Europe.

When longer swords are available such as the arming sword (i.e., the "standard" knightly sword), I don't see why anyone would opt for a short sword.

Perhaps the short sword was included in AD&D by Gygax for the ...

One of the chief problems when defining a skill system is making them "equal" (e.g., who would choose "tie a bow" over "conquer the world"?). Actually, to me, equality would largely consist of the amount of time and effort to learn and develop a skill. But playability is perhaps the overriding concern.

So, should there be a "wilderness survival" skill (keyed to climate and terrain), or should it be broken up into constituent skills instead?

The flail: real or fantasy weapon?

According to Paul B. Newman, author of Daily Life in the Middle Ages (p. 227), the ball-and-chain flail probably wasn't widely used during the Middle Ages, likely for these reasons:

the extra reach afforded by the chain can be matched by extending the length of the handle itself instead;

the flexibility of the chain reduces the force of the blow relative to the rigid handle of a a spiked club;

it was difficult to control in combat.

Some counterpoints of my own:

perhaps the chain ...

Armor notes

I am eliminating certain armor types that would be anachronistic according to the time period my world resembles (i.e., approx. AD 1000-1300), such as full plate and the plate cuirass. (The coat of plates, apparently a forerunner of brigandine, is available in some areas.) "Plate mail" (i.e., transitional plate armour) can be assembled from mail, a coat of plates, greaves, vambraces, a coif, and a closed helm.

Lamellar, scale, and brigandine are similar enough that they can be ...

Puncture weapons will have an "impale" value. An arrow's Damage Modifier might be +2 (to compare, a battle axe, which is not a puncture weapon, is around +8 ), but it would have an impale value of, say, +15.

Compute damage using the impale value as the damage modifier. If this is sufficient to incapacitate or kill the target at full health*, this is in fact the damage delivered. Otherwise, use the normal weapon damage.

Reasoning: an arrow or a spear is extremely dangerous ...

Mailed Fist IAQ

1. You have a campaign?

Yes, but I haven't GMed for some years.

2. What is Mailed Fist?

It's a work in progress that started in about 1988, when I decided to write my own RPG rules. AD&D didn't satisfy on an intellectual level, and I felt I had good or better ideas. After a few iterations (called Cells & Serpents, which I dropped when I learned that the name was already in use), one of which was actually played by the regular group, I started to revamp ...
