Expert D&D (1981 edition; Tom Moldvay, et al)
AD&D (1E, Gary Gygax, 1978)
Top Secret (original 1980 game, Merle Rasmussen)
A homemade western gunslinger game
Traveller aka Classic Traveller (played only briefly)
Car Wars (more tactical than role-playing-oriented)
Paranoia
Call of Cthulhu (various editions)
AD&D (2E, 1989, David Cook)
Top Secret/SI (1987, Douglas Niles)

D&D - don't care about virgins versions
A little Traveller
A little Paranoia

Although not really role playing games I have also played the following computer games based on the fantasy genre

Baldur's gate (go for the eyes boo! go for the eyes!)
Diablo (many sleepless nights)
Diablo 2 (still playing that one)
Am giving thought to World of Warcraft

I don't recognize Spelljammer in the RPG or computer format (even though I have played both).

I forgot about spell jammer, I played that to0 as well as another early d&d esk game called Fanstasy trip, by steve jackson before he formed his own compay .

I was getting my time lines all screwed up because jackson games was not formed as early as I remember but I knew he had designed a role play game but I just relearned that Jackson worked for a outfit called meta gamming concepts for a number of years before Steve Jackson games bringing out
Wizard, Melee, Fanstasy trip , Orgre, GEV, stellar conqust and Warp war, all games we played a great deal

I adapted ICE's Rolemaster skills system into my own rules (Cells & Serpents), as did Jonathan and SH. For spellcasting, I used Spell Law (a very good supplement, also by ICE). Jonathan used ICE's Arms & Claw Law for criticals (I cut off my own hand, but on another occasion killed a wizard with one shot, rolling a 00 then another 00) and initiative (Craig: "My initiative is next week").

Steve Jackson is a great game designer. Car Wars is genius. GURPS is a hell of a system (if Mailed Fist should fail, my next choice would be GURPS, though I hear good things about Burning Wheel).

Funny that you and I didn't play the same Steve Jackson games. I knew about Ogre/GEV and his other games like Illuminati, but never played them.

its an age thing, I was playing jackson games before they were his own company. He also pumped them out so fast we already had enough games to play. I bought very few of them I was just a willing victim for my buddies newest toy.

We also spent a lot of time on mega war games , the kind where you simulate the entire german front of WWII on an entire ping pong table. The jackson stuff we played in the back carols in the VP library at lunch

Paul Morris once talked about playing out a war with a combination of games. I think he had Risk in mind for grand strategy, but actual battles would be determined via more tactical games (he may have mentioned Sub Search as one example, a game very much like MB's Battleship).

I think he mentioned this when he found out that during grade 7 or 8 Roddy and I were recreating WWII as though we were the German High Command. We used actual maps, drew up plans, and allocated military units. Then we played out the battles with plastic figures and toy tanks, etc. Afterwards, we calculated casualties by pro-rating the simulation results and altered the strategic maps accordingly. We ended at the invasion of Britain (at Inverness, Cork, and another landing point).

Other wargames I've played:

D-Day (Avalon Hill; the German player is at a disadvantage, but Roddy as Hitler did beat me)
Age of Chivalry (recreates 3 or 4 major conflicts, including Hastings and Bouvines)
Pocket Stalingrad
Squad Leader (with Jonathan and Roddy; game was too lengthy to finish)
Axis and Allies (does that count?)

yeah fight the entire war using squad leader to simulate the battles on larger hexes in another game,, That way lies madness

I played many huge games and even playing every sunday it could take over a year to finish only to find out that because of the game length playtesting never found out how unbalance the game was.

I prefered Panzer to Squad leader, less detail for infantry more for tanks, a lot faster.

The Best game ever which gave decent detail to the entire war but was not stupid long (still a mutli week game) was one called The world in Flames. I kicked some ass playing that one and on points won the second world war for the Japs.

I ignored the U.S. after pearl harbour not wasting time taking useless islands rather I took out the captial of Austrailia, took the suez, invaded india and used everything I had to finish off China. My Nazi partner got creamed but I still won on points in 1946

Just read a review in Dragon #61 (May 1982) for Hitler's War, which the author, Tony Watson, says is superior to Avalon Hill's Third Reich, which apparently was the standard for "WWII grand strategic European warfare". Hitler's War sounds like a great game.

P.S. Roddy had Avalon Hill's Blitzkrieg. It was odd because the map was of an imaginary continent.

P.P.S. Roddy and I once played Risk using a real world map. We played the Cold War buildup, which included nukes. Sensibly, we made peace rather than kill millions or billions.

Hilters war is still a 1 or at most 2 day game, World in flames is probably a 100 hour game or less.... Europa's War in the East is a 500 hour game. These things are for crazy folk.

They also created a pre game game Days of Decision that includes both military stuff and political decisions which can be played before world in flames in order to alter the starting set up of the game. Imagine spain being an active ally for the axis, or turkey being convinced to join Germany again. India refusing to join the common wealth war effort. Italy not going axis.

CAR WARS.
Yes, I agree wth Lalanne. This game was genius. It was really bery simple in concept and execution. What made it seem 'difficult' was that it was so slow! it was like watching "Mad Max" at one frame every second. And still I found it really engrossing. It is the ultimate "bar encounter" game. You simple go from scenario to scenario ... no "role" player ... just mayhem ... played out in excrusiating slow motion. HAHAHA Laughing

I love the simplicity of making up a car with a bunch of guys and going around a track in opposite directions, trying to a) destroy each other, and b) win the race.
the other "mission-based" scenarios were also pretty cool.

And from a business stand-point, if that game had cought on (which there is no way it ever-could with the coming of the MTV generation) the supplimentary products would have been SO COOL! lol!

I started playing D&D (Basic) in the fall of '81. I'll never forget Alek (the DM) telling me after I had hit a hobgoblin with a mace-doing 3 points of damage-that the monster looked "about 3/5 dead".

When I started playing D&D we only had three players too, although I convinced another friend from school to join our group, and Jennifer joined in as well (mostly because she had a crush on Alek).

I think we "graduated" to AD&D after about six months (not more than a year) and our group also rotated DMs (Alek and myself), using Greyhawk as our shared world.

I had been sold Call of Cthulhu by a fervent staffer at Four Horsemen, but wasn't able to find anyone to play it with until I met Steve H. at York. Favourite CoC memories:
1. Harrison's character decides to get a bag of money before helping his compatriot who is being attacked by Deep Ones.
2. Craig's character decides to dress up as a ghost (stereotypical sheet deal) and give his friends a scare as a laugh. They think he's the real deal and fire off their guns (poor marksmanship saves Craig's character)
3. Giles and Donoghue's character infiltrate a cult, slowly working their way up the ranks. When they are invited into the more private (and monstorous) part of the cult, they are rudely awakened to the fact that the cultists knew about them all the time. They barely escape with their lives. (I think I actually saw the colour drain out of Giles' face as I (playing the head cultist) let them know that they were about to be sacrificed).

No matter how hard I try to wipe it from my brain, I remember playing Spelljammer at Giles' (On the pool table. The one with the bodies underneath it).

Car Wars brings back three indelible memories:
1. A race running on a figure-8 track in which Harrison's car lost control, flipped over numerous times, and landed right side up. After the required waiting time, he drove away again.
2. Playing in Giles' basement while drinking beer. Craig kept trying to take off my glasses and put them on. I finally lost it and threw him against the wall. My first thought after doing this was "Great. Now he's going to beat the shit out of me. (he didn't, and he stopped trying to take off my glasses)
3. The sunday group (Lalanne, Harrison, Craig?, Roddy?, Donoghue, and myself) were in Lalanne's basement. We had decided to play Car Wars (Top Secret?) and were setting up and waiting for Donoghue. When he showed up, somebody mentioned we would be playing Car Wars(or Top Secret). He was halfway down the stairs and in one fluid motion, turned around and left without saying a word. (Apparently he has some sort of restriction on playing whichever game we had decided on)

I've played Paranoia and really enjoyed the absurdity of it. Favourite memory: A character made a supremely bad decision, and instead of helping him avoid certain death, the rest of the party calmly took a few steps back and waited to see what was going to happen.

I have also played the revised edition of Top Secret.

Wargame-wise, I've played:

Blitzkreig
Axis & Allies
Panzerblitz
Squad Leader (probably my all time favourite wargame, although I think it can run too long too.)

I forgot about I.C.E. Middle Earth.

We included the critical tables in D&D. My favourite critical was

"The targets nervous system acts as a super conductor, providing all with a fine light show"

That one made me howl!

Carter and I played Wooden Ships and Iron men once or twice. It was a tactical game not role-playing. There was allot of dancing around for position (ie being upwind). We played for hours when I decided I had to do something radical to break the veritable stalemate we were facing. Whatever I did, didn't work and I ended up getting seriously broken by a worst case scenario stern rake. Even after that the game still lasted hours. It could be a good game from what I recall.

Do you still have it Carter?

How much did she play? Does she know the rules?

All are familiar, even though I wasn't a participant.

A few of mine:

1. When you and SH were overwhelmed by a mob of hillbillies even though you were armed and firing at point blank range. Defying the odds, you both kept rolling misses. This was played in your parents' basement.

2. Same adventure, but different players. I think this was played in a high school science room. Troy and Craig made it to the evil guy's secret laboratory. Craig's guy shot a nearby oil drum and incinerated the entire room. Everyone died.

3. The first CoC adventure SH and I played, with you as Keeper. We descended to an underground room filled with recently dead people (all women?) who we thought (knew?) were vampires. Because we were average people (not die hard adventurers), we couldn't bring ourselves to harm the bodies. While we were down there, I was terrified that the trapdoor to the chamber would somehow shut us in until the sun went down.

That was a great race--not just because I won. At one point, one of SH's cars was totalled, but the driver survived and started running along the track as though he could win on foot--until one of my cars drove by and shot him to death. Love it!

This sounds like the night we laid out the entire town of Midville on the aforementioned pool table (the one with the bodies). Half of us played the biker gang riding in to cause havoc, and the rest of us operated the town defence force. We were drinking and tipsy. The motorcycles wiped out on the first turn because they were bunched too closely to maneuver. [Nelson]Haw! Haw![/Nelson]

I remember this. It was Top Secret. It's puzzling, because he's a Bond fan. He even had the 007 RPG. Could it be because Top Secret <> James Bond? (Roddy once had a Top Secret character named James Bond. There was something ingenious about that.)

I think I remember this incident also. It was Phil, wasn't it? He said or did something that the rest of us knew would result in swift, violent retribution. (Phil was also the third racer in the Car Wars figure-8 race. Hey, Jonathan, I don't remember you being in the race. Were you? If not, what were you doing?

The campaign I ran ended in disaster when the PCs attracted police attention to the hotel they were staying in (the Shoreman House--which you dubbed "the Longshoreman"). Instead of fleeing, the PCs hid in their room. Alas, the police were conducting room-to-room searches. Anyway, I have a few outstanding Top Secret/SI scenarios if anyone is interested in playing. The Top Secret/SI rules are quite good and easy to play.

Best fumble had to be for two handed weapons:

Worst move seen in ages! You are out 2 days with a groin injury. Thereis a 50% chance your foes will be out for 3 rounds, laughing.

you make it sound like i never lit off some kinda fire ball ish type thing and killed the entire party before...i've done it at least twice. (and killed the entire party). But I think in both cases I snuffed the bad guys too...and that is the most important part.

1. I man I totally remember that! And, yah, I actually had two chances to win that one. The car that did the multiple flips and landed upright nearly got to the finish line, but was so badly damaged the next hit went right through the passneger's side and killed the driver (the car still was operational!!!),,, and then the other car (we all had 2) finally could go no further ... i had the driver get out and run to the finish line, and was sooooo close! and Lananne drove up and killed him. Crying or Very sad

hilarious!

3. This image is crystal clear in my head because I answered the door. Dave comes in ... he is not two steps in Lalanne's front door when he is told it is TS we are playing, and without missing a beat, he turns, says goodbye, and leaves ... no other words spoken.
Lalanne was behind me (I think) and we were stunned, just watching him go ... we knew he said he didn't like those games, but .. geez!...
