It would also be good if each person look in their inventory for scroll that can be transcribed to book form,,

Dito for our 2 npc mages, they should transcribe all their spells and scrolls to a central library, That way we have a decent collection and might offer a few scholarships for potential mages too poor for Greyhawk. Trade training for service to the town.

Cool.

Can I copy items from my spell book to the library without loosing them from my book? I'd be happy to copy them if there are no ill impacts. Also, if I do this could I be reimbursed for the spells that I purchased last session (keep in mind I'm not a kazillionaire)? Unfortunately, I doubt the spells rewritten without components will be usable by others given my specialty.

I know I also have a teleport and extension 1 scroll. I don't want to lose the teleport scroll by copying it to the library records (can I copy a spell from a scroll without losing the spell on the scroll?) as it may save our collective bacon at some point.

As I understand it the scroll is destroyed , but I may be wrong. I think the best scrolls to use this way are ones that are learn-able by our peers, now, that way one spell can benefit many. In the case of high level spells we should save them for emergency use. That said a single teleport would be assumed cast at the lowest level possible for the spell, meaning it would save your ass but you'd never be able to carry even one of us with you.

Copying spell book to spell book only takes time, it does not destroy the spell, The Library should have a copy of everyone's spells including ones no one ever casts or weirdo spells like yours.. who knows some millennium we might attract a second symbolist.

We might pick up spell costs for you this time, but most of the time its going to your problem to buy or trade. The council needs to vote whether to compensate you.

Understood and agreed on the cost of spell acquisition.

I only ask at this point as I will be "donating" these recently purchased spells (as well as others) to the library.

Why don't you donate to him some of the wealth that you have to give up as a paladin?

P.S. In the 2ed. PH, a paladin cannot give his excess wealth to a PC or an "NPC controlled by a player", though this seems silly because a character who is aware that people are characters controlled by players breaks the suspension of disbelief. As a DM I would not enforce this; I would only question an odd or irrational choice to prevent metagaming (i.e., the player should be able to explain why his PC chose a given recipient).

A paladin can retain enough treasure to "support himself in a modest manner, pay his henchmen, men-at-arms and servitors a reasonable rate, and to construct or maintain a small castle or keep (funds can be set aside for this purpose). All excess must be donated to the church or another worthy cause. This money can never be given to another player character or NPC controlled by a player" (p. 28). Could Cirdastan itself be a worthy cause? I'd say yes, except that a community is not a cause (its members could participate in a cause)--unless we force every settler to become a member of the church such that the community itself = the church. However, I am not willing to go that far, because I don't want the church to rule over us.

P.P.S. I also see that, also according to the 2e PH (p. 26), only fighters can take weapon specialization. First-edition paladins could specialize using the cavalier rules because they were a subclass of the latter.

P.P.P.S. These are a few reasons why Mopar didn't become a paladin of Cirda.

Good answer. (Jonathan: I subtly wave off the arresting officers.)

(I'm not picking on you, kubera. I've been rereading my AD&D material. Lately, it's the 2e PH. Earlier: most of my adventure modules, MM, MMII, and FF. I think like a DM as much as a player; this means I speak up to help the DM if it looks like he missed something of significance. We're all trustworthy players; no one is out to fool the DM. We're trying to represent a form of collective reality in our imaginations, one that is partially shaped by the rules/guidelines; when there's a known divergence, the game suffers. Finally, we all want to play the game as intended. On the other hand, if your PC falls into a 10' spike-lined pit and the DM rolls 1 damage, I don't think I'd remind him that he forgot to account for the spikes.)

There a lot of peculiarities in the case of Rild the Paladin, due to the circumstance and his importance to the recovery of the cult.

1, he does not have the mental capabilities or the demeanor required in the rules for a paladin.

2. he's not LG

3. he's not been asked to divest his monies but that said he has not been using money to buy himself shit, I've spend a larger portion (then the rest of you) of my cash building the temple, the planned keep and walls to defend it, looking for other sites to set up our young acolytes in their own parishes etc. As defender of the faith, who would I turn the money over too, in some ways I am one pillar of the church so I must behave as such.

I had wanted us all to take a year off from adventuring (during our last Hiatus in play) and concentrate on building the defenses and training the soldiers. I know we are not going to settle down and just play house, but until the town is fortified properly and reasonably safe, I don't think we would be running off so much as we do. Provided we get the kiln, the laborers etc I should be damn near broke in one year and the money will not be an issue any longer. As for magic stuff my last 2 choices were staves I gave to the church to arm the girls. I've left my "talk with dead" harp with the church so I am quite sure I'm not hoarding magic loot

4. I've not been told I couldn't specialize,, I always pictured a Paladin that much more dedicated to his craft than a normal warrior and can't see that restriction being valid, we'll see. Ya never know with the mutli version hybrid we play which rules Jonathan is going with.

I would say the town is a cause, not because we are converting everyone and letting the church run it but because we chose to make this outpost Cirda's new home, by default the survival of her church is based on the survival of our town. Of course my role will be to increase Cirda's influence , You and the other owners will have to be vigilant that I don't take over lol!

Holy tangent batman!

I was only asking for like 1400 gp in exchange for the spells that I recently bought and was giving to the town library. The excess wealth of the Dread Paladin Rild was not really what I had in mind.

SL

In case you did not notice I did set forth the rules to which I must abide and they were ok'd, I was unaware of the specialist thing, Johnathan must rule on that.

Yes, but irrelevant, because I trust that any player would/should have blown the whistle. If not, why not? (If I did it again, I'd use PM/email, but we're not children.)
