http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage

The site is about storytelling conventions in film, TV, RPGs, etc.

A few to start on:

Crystal Dragon Jesus: a fictional religion whose trappings resemble Christianity's.
Lovecraftian tropes
Big Lipped Alligator Moment:

Quote :
•At the end of the Japanese version of Frankenstein Conquers the World (yeah, you already know this sentence isn't gonna end well) the monster gets randomly attacked by a giant octopus wandering through the forest. ◦Now, now, give credit where credit's due. They didn't just have a giant octopus just tromping through the forest. That would be silly! It's a Japan Lake Octopus, operating in a completely natural environment for a giant freshwater octopus!

Tabletop Gaming tropes
Chunky Salsa Rule
Acceptable Breaks From Reality
Law of Inverse Recoil: "The recoil of a real-life projectile weapon on television is inversely related to the recoil it has in real life."

I saw a mention of this tvtopes item on the Tao of D&D:

From http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FlameWar:

Quote :
On the official Dungeons And Dragons forums, discussing any of the novels is an offense punishable by an instant ban, because of what appears to have been one of the worst flame wars in recorded history. The admins and mods did a VERY thorough job of making sure that the posts comprising the Flame War got deleted, and if a mod even hints at the cause of it, they get fired immediately. [Link in original]

Jonathan, any idea what the flame war was about?

Warhammer 40000 is not a happy place

From Tvtropes:

Quote :
Thirty-eight thousand years in the future, the mighty Imperium of Man has expanded across the galaxy... to discover that the galaxy is a hell that would make Hieronymous Bosch shit himself in terror, and that it has a hell. From without, the Imperium is assailed by alien monsters from the depths of space, nightmare death-machines and soulless daemons (as well as soulless death-machines and nightmare daemons, and the occasional soulless daemon in a nightmare death machine); from within, treachery, heresy, mindless incompetence and the festering taint of Chaos threaten to tear it apart. [...]

The basic premise of 40k [...] is that of an eternal, impossibly vast conflict between a number of absurdly powerful genocidal, xenocidal and in one case omnicidal factions, with every single weapon, ideology and creative piece of nastiness imaginable turned up to eleven. [...]

The 40k universe is a spectacularly brutal playground of tropes and horrible things taken to their absolute extreme, and in some cases, beyond. Entire planets with populations of billions are lost due to rounding errors in tax returns. Orders of capricious, fanatical, genetically engineered Super Soldier Knights Templar serve as the Imperium's special forces, while the trillions of soldiers in its regular armies take disregard for human life further than most people could believe possible.

In retrospect, the previous post seemed to lack a context (the subject is not highly visible), so I updated it to communicate more clearly that the quote is a description of the grim Warhammer 40000 setting.
