On TCM this Friday:
  • Bedlam (1946). 5 PM. Karloff runs the titular lunatic asylum in 18th century London. Not really a horror.
  • The Ghoul (1933). 6:30 PM. Karloff. This one has evaded me for many years.
  • The Haunted Palace (1963). 8 PM. A Corman film starring Vincent Price. Based on Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."
  • Die, Monster, Die! (1965). 9:30 PM. Karloff plays an elderly patriarch cooped up in a mysterious mansion. The deformed-slime-creature effects are impressive.
  • The Shuttered Room (1967). 11 PM. Based on a work by Lovecraft and Derleth.
  • The Dunwich Horror (1970). 12:45 AM.

I've seen Haunted Palace, Die Monster Die, and Dunwich Horror.

I thought that Haunted Palace was quite good, Dunwich Horror alright, and Die Monster Die cheesy as hell (and not in a good way). I haven't seen the others.

Because I didn't check the listings in time, the other day I missed Vampyr (1932) and The Black Room (1935)--both of which I've not seen. D'oh! And last year, The Ghoul was supposed to air but didn't.

For decent online TV listings, go to http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/ and click the "TV Listings" link on the left. Then enter your postal code. Normally it shows about 20 channels per page, but the trick to seeing every channel on one page is to select movies from the categories filter: Subsequent page loads will display every channel on one page, but after a certain period (maybe 20-40 min.), the "default" list (shorter and unfiltered) will load the next time you click "GO".

If you've found a better site, let me know.

P.S. I have your VHS copy of Day of the Beast. I'll bring it next time we meet.

I quite liked Vampyr when I saw it back in University. Film Theory: Best. Course. Ever.
It also helped to have a professor who was a fan of horror movies.

The Ghoul (1933) was disappointing. Too many shadowy figures skulking about. Not much else.
